KLEINMOND, South Africa - A South African inventor unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.

Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.



Seems like a good idea, but are women really going to wear this thing 24/7?

  • If nothing else, it should, er, sharply reduce date rape on college campuses.

    I hope they have eliminated the possibility of self-embarbment.

    That could be quite serious for the young women and may interfere with FDA approval.

  • In re 24/7, I think there are times of greater and lesser risk possibly, but for those most concerned, for those who have been attacked previously, I would think that the psychological benefit would be worth it.

    Obvious times might be first dates, when working very late, when traveling through unsafe areas, when suddenly made to feel insecure.

    One thing I just thought of is that it could get tricky in a multiple assailant situation.

    However, if there is ANY relationship between the assailants, the fact that one HAD to go to the hospital might make them all back off,

    wonder if street gangs might develop in house methods of treatment would occur or of the damage is Chinese puzzle like and it really is a magger of aneastetic and a real operating theater.
